Echoing Pre-Iraq War Disinformation Campaign,
Bush Now Targets Iran

Interview with retired U.S. Army Reserve Col. Ann Wright,
conducted by Scott Harris

targetiran

While the brutal civil war in Iraq daily claims scores of Iraqi and U.S. lives, President Bush seems ever more focused on further escalating threats against the government of Iran. President Bush's announcement that American soldiers are now under orders to capture or kill Iranian operatives inside Iraq that the administration claims are aiding Shiite militias targeting U.S. forces follows other troubling signs that a new war might be close at hand. While U.S. pressure on Iran to end their nuclear program has thus far failed to reverse Tehran's policy, the White House has arrested Iranian diplomats inside Iraq and dispatched a third aircraft carrier group off the Iranian coast.

On Feb. 11, anonymous U.S. military officials presented examples of explosively formed penetrator bombs that they maintain is evidence Iran is supplying these weapons to Shiite groups inside Iraq who are attacking U.S. soldiers. But many observers, and even a top U.S. general, are labeling these claims as dubious. Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that he "would not say" that Iran's leadership was aware of or condoned the attacks.

Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Ann Wright, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve who resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in protest of the Iraq war on March 19, 2003. She examines what she believes would be the dire consequences for the U.S. and the Middle East if President Bush decides to launch a war against Iran and explains why she has appealed to U.S. military personnel to disobey what she believes would be unlawful orders to attack Iran.

Ann Wright is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and 20-year U.S. Army veteran. Read her article titled "An Appeal to Conscience to Those Who Would Bomb Iran".

Congress will Soon Consider Bill Providing
Public Financing for
All Federal Election Campaigns

Interview with Nick Nyhart,
executive director of Public Campaign,
conducted by Melinda Tuhus

campaignfinance

A blizzard of recent congressional corruption scandals have highlighted the ongoing difficulties in trying to get big money out of U.S. politics, despite campaign finance reform laws passed by Congress in the early years of the Bush administration and an ethics bill just passed by the Democratic-controlled Congress. Presidential contenders for 2008-- Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain -- have both already declared their intention to forego public campaign cash in order to exceed federal limits and raise much more money from private interests.

Many members of Congress as well, have already figured out ways around tougher ethics rules for lobbyists. For example, while lobbyists can no longer purchase politicians' fancy meals -- as a way of buying access and favorable treatment for their favored legislation -- lobbyists instead can now make contributions to a politician's campaign coffers.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Nick Nyhart, executive director of Public Campaign, which has for years been a persistent advocate for public financing of electoral campaigns. While two states -- Arizona and Maine -- have a successful track record of such public funding, and other states are moving in that direction, Nyhart says a comprehensive solution lies in passage of a federal law covering all U.S. congressional elections. After the Watergate scandal about 30 years ago, and again in the early 1990s, attempts were made to push through similar measures, but Nyhart explains why the bill about to be introduced is more far-reaching.

Democratic Potential of New Digital Media
Threatened by Corporate Hijackers

Interview with Jeff Chester,
author of "Digital Destiny, New Media and the Future of Democracy,"
conducted by Scott Harris

netneutrality

In the future, Internet technology will likely evolve into an essential telecommunications tool that will be considered a modern necessity in a majority of people's homes. What's simply a digital connection to websites today will soon morph into a single portal through which we will be connected to telephone communication, as well as evermore advanced interactive Internet, television and radio programming.

But the potential of the Internet to serve as a diverse and democratic medium in the U.S. is now threatened by powerful, political and economic forces, according to Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy. In his new book, "Digital Destiny, New Media and the Future of Democracy," Chester describes how giant telecommunications corporations are lobbying the FCC to eliminate federal rules which have ensured Net neutrality -- or a level playing field -- for all content providers and replace it with a multi-tiered pay to play system. The author also raises an alarm about the stealth collection of personal data which threatens consumers' right to privacy.

Documenting the current corporate drive for monopoly control of our communications and media system, Chester provides some reason for hope in recalling how a grassroots rebellion derailed FCC plans for further media ownership deregulation in 2003. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Jeff Chester about the threats to free expression and privacy for consumers and citizens described in his new book, "Digital Destiny," and the active role citizens can play to counter those threats and democratize our media system.

Visit the Center for Digital Democracy at www.democraticmedia.org. Chester's book, "Digital Destiny, New Media and the Future of Democracy," is published by the New Press.
