 Canadian Citizen Rendered to Syria for Torture by White House Demands Justice in U.S. Court Interview with Maria LaHood, senior attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights conducted by Scott Harris  Arar challenged his rendition to Syria in a U.S. court in 2004, but a federal judge dismissed the case in 2006 on the grounds that the lawsuit would jeopardize national security. The Canadian government has since issued a report finding that Arar had no ties to terrorists, committed no crime -- and offered an apology, awarding him $10 million dollars in compensation. Arar, who is still banned from entering the U.S., had his attorneys back in court in early November to appeal the case before the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York. He hopes his lawsuit will expose the Bush administration's practice of "extraordinary rendition," secure an official apology from the U.S. government and reach a monetary damages settlement. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Maria LaHood, senior attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights who is working on the Arar case. SOA-Watch was founded in 1990 when Father Roy Bourgeois, a Maryknoll missionary priest, and two others carried out a creative non-violent protest action on the military base. They were protesting the assassinations on Nov. 16, 1989 of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her teenage daughter in El Salvador by Salvadoran troops whose officers had been trained at the School of the Americas. Over the years, the protests have grown astronomically. Last year, about 20,000 people came from all over the U.S. to participate in workshops, hold musical celebrations, and march in a solemn funeral procession commemorating the tens of thousands of civilians from all over Latin America who have died at the hands of graduates of the school. Earlier this year, a resolution to cut funding to the school failed in the House by only six votes. Between the Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with SOA Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois about the progress made toward closing the school since last year's protest. Kucinich Succeeds in MovingImpeachment Resolution Against Cheney Forward Interview with journalist David Lindorff, conducted by Scott Harris  When a vote finally did occur, Republicans, in an attempt to embarrass House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has repeatedly stated that impeachment was "off the table," supported the legislation. At the last minute, however, many Democrats not wanting to be seen as defending Cheney, changed their votes from supporting Pelosi's attempt to table the measure, to supporting the resolution. As a result of all the political maneuvering, the impeachment debate will now move to the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Michigan Democrat Rep. John Conyers. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with journalist Dave Lindorff, who co-authored the book, "The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. Bush from Office," with attorney Barbara Olshansky. Lindorff summarizes the basis for the Cheney impeachment resolution and looks at the road ahead for getting a serious hearing on the high crimes and misdemeanors that Kucinich and many others assert have been committed by both the vice president and President Bush.
