Bush Administration Firing of U.S. Attorneys Linked to GOP Election Strategy RealAudio Interview with David Becker, director of People for the American Way's Democracy Campaign, conducted by Scott Harris As congressional investigations continue into the Justice Department firing of 9 U.S. attorneys, there is growing evidence that a Republican Party plan to influence the outcome of the 2006 federal elections was a primary motivation for the terminations. Almost half the U.S. attorneys targeted for firing had been the subject of complaints by Republicans party activists concerned about their lack of aggressiveness in prosecuting alleged cases of voter fraud. According to press reports and official documents, President Bush's political advisor Karl Rove put pressure on the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute dubious voter-fraud allegations linked to Republican Party electoral strategy. Observers say the GOP has a pattern of employing voter fraud charges to intimidate primarily minority voters in key battleground states. The May 14 resignation of Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty added to the U.S. attorney scandal, where Democratic and some Republican lawmakers continue to call for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez. McNulty, the fourth senior Justice Department official to resign as a result of the scandal, had provided false information to Congress on the details of the U.S. attorney firings. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with David Becker, director of People for the American Way's Democracy Campaign. He served as a senior trial attorney with the Justice Department for seven years in both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Becker examines the links between the firings of the U.S. attorneys and the 2006 congressional election.
