Interview with Shahnaz Rouse,
The president of Pakistan, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, declared emergency rule and suspended his nation's constitution on Nov. 3 while ordering the arrests of thousands of opposition leaders, attorneys and human rights activists. Gen. Musharraf fired the Supreme Court days before the justices were to decide if his Oct. 6 re-election as president was lawful. Parliamentary elections, scheduled for January, could now be delayed. Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who upon her return to Pakistan from self-exile on Oct. 18 was targeted by a bomb attack that killed 140 of her supporters, called on Gen. Musharraf to lift martial law and hold elections. Gen. Musharraf cited a recent wave of violent attacks by Islamic militants sympathetic to the Taliban and Al Qaeda as a justification for declaring emergency rule and firing the Supreme Court. But his violent crackdown has been focused on civil society and his secular political opponents. Gen. Musharraf, one of President Bush's staunchest allies in his wars in Afghanistan and against Al Qaeda, has received more than $10 billion in U.S. aid since 2001, most of it given to the military. President Bush has asked that elections go forward, but has not threatened to suspend military aid. Pakistan's ousted chief justice Mohammed Chaudhry, under house arrest, has called on the nation to revolt against Gen. Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Shahnaz Rouse, professor of sociology at Sarah Lawrence College, who assesses the volatile political and military situation in nuclear-armed Pakistan after Gen.
