Interview with Ken Bossong,
In late December, as the Democratic Party was preparing to take control of the reins of both the House and Senate on Jan. 4, advocates representing 102 business, consumer, environmental and energy policy groups sent a letter to congressional leaders. The groups urged federal energy research and development funds be shifted from fossil fuel and nuclear power programs to those supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency. The letter specifically proposes changes in the Fiscal Year 2007 budget for the U.S. Department of Energy, which the 110th Congress is expected to consider shortly after convening in early January. The groups noted that "a shift in federal funding from mature and/or polluting technologies to cleaner, safer, and sustainable energy sources offers the best option for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing oil imports, and addressing the nation's other pressing energy and deficit-reduction needs within the constraints of a very tight federal budget." Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Ken Bossong, of the Sustainable Energy Network, which sent out the letter. He talks about the role that mandating efficiency regulations can play in reducing energy demand that is effective, both in terms of environmental impact and cost, and how renewables such as wind, solar, and geothermal can reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global climate change. Bossong also points out that the Democratic Party-controlled Congress still presents obstacles to achieving the Network's goals.
