Interview with Elizabeth Holtzman,
Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, was convicted March 6 on one count of obstruction of justice, two counts of perjury and one count of lying to the FBI. The jury found him not guilty on one additional charge of making a false statement to the FBI. The case grew out of the Bush administration's effort to discredit Iraq War critic and former ambassador Joseph Wilson, after he challenged the president's rationale for the war by publicly discussing his 2002 fact-finding trip to Niger. While on the CIA mission there, he found no support for the president's claim that Iraq was seeking to buy uranium for its nuclear weapons program in the African nation. Federal prosecutors claimed that Libby was given information about Valerie Plame, Wilson's wife -- a covert CIA operative -- by Dick Cheney and others; revealed this information to journalists; and when questioned by investigators, lied about his role. Libby, who also served as an assistant to President Bush, could face up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced June 5. His lawyers say they will ask for a new trial or appeal the conviction, but many Republican Party activists are demanding that President Bush give Libby a pardon. Between The Lines' Scott Harris, spoke with former four-term New York congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, who served on the House Judiciary Committee during impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon. She assesses the Libby verdict, what it reveals about the inner workings of the White House operation to attack its critics, and where she feels the investigation should go next in Congress. Elizabeth Holtzman is the author of "The Impeachment of George W. Bush: A Handbook for Concerned Citizens," published by Nation books.
