Interview with Jeremy Scahill,
In his new best-selling book, "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill asserts that the private military contractor and security firm Blackwater USA, is the elite Praetorian Guard for the Bush administration's "global war on terror," with its own military base, a fleet of 20 aircraft, and 20,000 soldiers at the ready. Blackwater USA first came to the American public's attention in March 2004, when four Blackwater contractors were killed in an ambush in Falluja, Iraq. The men were burned and strung up on a bridge over the Euphrates River. This later led to a brutal U.S. counterattack on Fallujah, which killed hundreds of civilians, fueling the Iraqi insurgency. As Scahill writes in his book, thousands of soldiers of fortune working with Blackwater and other mercenary armies in Iraq, comprise a parallel military, immune from prosecution under Iraqi law and unaccountable under the U.S. Uniform Code of Military Justice. Blackwater's founder, Erik Prince, is a multi-millionaire, right-wing Christian fundamentalist ex-Navy Seal. Prince and his family have a long history of bankrolling many right-wing causes and are big supporters of President Bush. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Jeremy Scahill about Erik Prince's religious philosophy and why he feels that outsourcing the U.S. military could, in the not too distant future, threaten America's democracy.
