 U.S. Iraq OccupationDoomed from the Start Interview with journalist and author Jonathan Steele, conducted by Scott Harris  Jonathan Steele, senior foreign correspondent with the Guardian Newspaper of London, reported from Iraq, beginning with the U.S. invasion in 2003 until 2007. In his new book, "Defeat: Why America and Britain Lost Iraq," Steele lays out his view that regardless of the many mistakes made by the U.S. military, violent resistance to foreign occupation was inevitable, given the Iraqi people's history of fighting past colonial occupations. On March 17, Vice President Dick Cheney made a surprise visit to Baghdad, where he declared that five years of war and nation-building have produced a "successful endeavor" that has been well worth the effort. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Steele about the central message of his book and the way forward for U.S. Iraq policy being debated in this year's American presidential election. Iraq War Spending Cuts Deep into State and Local Budgets Interview with Greg Speeter, executive director of the National Priorities Project, conducted by Melinda Tuhus 
The National Priorities Project, a research organization based in Northampton, Mass., looks at U.S. federal funding priorities and how tax dollars are spent by state, congressional district, and in some cases, counties and cities. The organization just released a new report analyzing President Bush's proposed 2009 budget, which examines the impact of spending, maintaining the president's tax cuts for the wealthy and budget cuts in four federal programs: Section 8 housing, community development block grants, low-income heating assistance and social service block grants. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Greg Speeter, executive director of the National Priorities Project, who summarizes his group's report and describes the impact Iraq war spending has had on federal and state budgets. Bear Stearns Bailed Out While Millions Face Home Foreclosures Interview with Michael Zweig, professor of economics at the State University of New York, conducted by Scott Harris  The real estate meltdown, combined with rising unemployment has fueled predictions of a severe recession. Many economists don't believe the hundreds of dollars in tax rebates being sent to American households this spring will stave off the economic crisis. While Washington uses tax payer money to bail out private investment firms, some legislators and citizen groups are demanding stricter regulations and oversight of financial institutions to prevent future irresponsible lending practices. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Michael Zweig, professor of economics at the State University of New York, Stony Brook and director of the Center for Study of Working Class Life. Zweig examines the Bear Stearns bailout in the context of the larger economic crisis facing working men and women across the nation.
