Interview with independent journalist Dahr Jamail, But despite fewer attacks by Sunni insurgents, Shiite militias and al Qaeda fighters, Iraq is still very much at war with American soldiers and Iraqi civilians continuing to be killed. The U.S. Air Force recently dropped some 40,000 pounds of bombs in villages south of Baghdad. According to the group, Just Foreign Policy, more than 1.1 million Iraqis have thus far been killed as a result of the U.S. war and occupation. Iraq's Defense Minister told the Pentagon on Jan. 14 that American troops will be needed in his country for another 10 years. Although the Iraq war has receded in importance during the early presidential primary elections, the ongoing volatility in Iraq can be seen in Washington's failure to pressure the Iraqi government to make progress in achieving political reconciliation among Sunnis and Shiites. The recent revision of Iraq's de-Baathification law has been met with skepticism by many former members of Saddam Hussein's Baathist Party, most of whom are Sunnis Muslims. The government has also failed to adopt a law governing the fair distribution of revenues from Iraq's oil wealth. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with independent journalist and author Dahr Jamail, who reported from the streets of Iraq for eight months between November 2003 and February 2005.
