Interview with Jasmine Tyler, The laws governing sentencing for cocaine possession and sales were passed in the 1980s, when it was believed that crack was a much more addictive and dangerous form of cocaine than the powdered kind, and when crack-fueled crimes were wreaking havoc in America's inner cities. The Sentencing Commission's decision does not affect mandatory minimum sentences imposed by Congress and will thus likely benefit only a relatively small number of prisoners. The decision becomes effective March 3. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Jasmine Tyler, deputy director of national affairs at the Drug Policy Alliance, an organization that has been pushing to end the disparity in cocaine offense sentencing. She explains who is most likely to benefit from the recent decision, and what Congress can do to bring more fairness to the process.
