Congress Calls on Pentagon
Since an April 20 New York Times article revealed how the Pentagon recruited and successfully embedded a group of 75 retired U.S. military officers as pro-Iraq war TV network commentators, the media companies that hired them have largely remained silent on the issue. Networks, including Fox News, NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC and NPR used the Pentagon's approved cheeleaders, many of whom had financial ties to military contractors profiting from the war, with little or no questions about possible conflicts of interest.
and FCC to Investigate Pro-war Propaganda Operation Interview with Timothy Karr, campaign director with Free Press, conducted by Scott Harris Thus far, 41 members of the House of Representatives have called on the Pentagon's inspector general to investigate the covert operation. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., described the propaganda program as an "unethical, and potentially illegal, propaganda campaign aimed at deliberately misleading the American public." In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission on May 6, Reps. DeLauro and John Dingell, D-Mich., asked the agency to probe whether the Pentagon's special briefings and trips to Iraq offered to the retired officers was sufficient to require sponsorship identification when the analysts appeared on TV. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisc., demanded the Government Accountability Office look into whether the program violated prohibitions on publicity or propaganda activities. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Timothy Karr, campaign director with Free Press. He explains why his group and others around the nation are demanding accountability from the Pentagon, Bush administration officials and media corporations for an apparently illegal operation that subjected the American public to blatant government propaganda.
