Interview with Kim Ives, an editor with Haiti Liberte, conducted by Scott Harris  Reacting to Preval's decision -- and violent attacks on their protests by the Haitian Police and U.N. troops -- the university students are now demanding that President Preval resign. The struggle for an increase in the minimum wage battle is being played out against the backdrop of the long-running conflict between Haiti's poor majority and the nation's small wealthy class. Aware that certain sectors of the business class twice organized the overthrow of former President Jean Bertrand Aristide, Rene Preval has been attempting to walk a tight rope between assisting the poor who voted him into office and appeasing the rich. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Kim Ives, a documentary filmmaker and editor with the newspaper Haiti Liberte. Outcome of Supreme Court Case Could Unleash During the last presidential election, a group called Citizens United produced a TV documentary attacking then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Its broadcast raised the question of whether the documentary would be protected free speech or regulated as political communication. Initial court decisions ruled it was an attack ad that should be regulated under election laws.

Interview with Nick Nyhart, president of Public Campaign, conducted by Melinda Tuhus 
After the election, the five-judge conservative majority on the Supreme Court decided to use this case to revisit a 1990 Supreme Court ruling, Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce, that banned corporations from spending money to influence elections. Arguments before the court -- the first case to include new associate justice Sonia Sotomayor -- took place in early September and a ruling is expected this November. Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Nick Nyhart, president of Public Campaign, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to sweeping campaign reform that aims to dramatically reduce the role of special interest money in American politics. University of Texas Stands Up
On Aug. 17, the Federal District court for the Western District of Texas issued a decision upholding the University of Texas at Austin's consideration of race in determining student admissions. The ruling by Judge Sam Sparks in Fisher v. Texas, was the first federal court challenge to the use of race in college admissions since the Supreme Court's 2003 Grutter v. Bollinger decision. That ruling declared that universities can consider race in order to pursue a diverse student body.

Interview with Anurima Bhargava, assistant counsel, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, conducted by Scott Harris  In April of 2008, Abigail Fisher and Rachel Michalewicz, who are both white, filed a lawsuit that challenged their rejection from admission to the University of Texas at Austin. The two women's attorneys argued that a Texas law that guarantees admission to the top 10 percent of high school graduates was sufficient to ensure a racially diverse student population. Despite that law, the court noted, African Americans never exceeded 4.5 percent of the freshman class at UT. The Univerity of Texas has a stated goal to achieve "critical mass," which allows minority students to participate in a learning environment free of racial stereotypes and hostilities. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Anurima Bhargava, assistant counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund who examines the significance of the Texas federal court decision.
