Many Ways to Support Between The Lines' Bringing Progressive Voices to More Listeners

With Google's, Facebook's and the Trump administration's attacks on "fake news" that threaten long-standing, independent media resources like Between The Lines, we are facing new challenges. From keeping up with technological changes, to the the FCC plans to dismantle Net Neutrality and allow right-wing Sinclair TV (aka "Trump TV") in 72 percent of U.S. households, we need your support as we continue to raise another $1000 by the end of this year.

Please donate now to help keep progressive voices and viewpoints on the airwaves. See our thank you gifts for your donation.

This Week on Between The Lines

Posted Dec. 8, 2010 for week ending Dec. 17, 2010

lede

A new and dangerous
phase of the class war has begun.

After hearing the toxic rhetoric in the 2010 midterm congressional election campaign, it's more apparent than ever that some Republican politicians and their allies in right-wing media have set a goal to eliminate unemployment insurance, Medicare, food stamps, and the federally mandated minimum wage -- as well as to privatize Social Security.

It's ironic that the super-rich corporations and individuals who bankroll the Republican machine are the very same forces that caused the global economic meltdown by advocating reckless financial deregulation and billions of tax breaks for the nation's wealthiest citizens. But sadly, millions of frustrated voters, angry about obscenely high unemployment and a bad economy, were skillfully manipulated into voting against their own economic self-interest on Nov. 2nd.

Progressives Rally to Oppose Obama-GOP Tax Cut Deal

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Interview with Arshad Hasan, executive director of Democracy for America, conducted by Scott Harris

taxtherich In the aftermath of the Democrats' loss of the House in November's midterm congressional election, the expiring Bush-era tax cuts was one of the main issues facing legislators in the lame duck session which closes out at the end of the year. Unemployment insurance is also about to expire for millions of out-of-work Americans. But, the Republicans' strategy was to hold extending support for the unemployed hostage and continuing middle-class tax cuts in return for getting President Obama to renege on his campaign pledge to end the Bush tax cuts for the nation's wealthiest citizens. It Will Take Years To Assess BP Oil Spill Environmental Damage

RealAudio RealAudio  podcast MP3

Interview with Kerry St. Pe, executive director at the Barataria-Terrebone National Estuary Program, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

estuary In late summer, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, issued a report claiming that three-quarters of the more than five million barrels of oil that erupted from British Petroleum's Deep Water Horizon's oil rig after the platform's explosion which killed 11 workers -- had disappeared. Many biologists and scientists studying the Gulf oil spill were very skeptical of that finding. But a more recent government report from November more or less confirms that study. Still, the long-term impact of the massive BP oil spill on the environment and the fishing industry won't be known for many years. Story continues

WikiLeaks Spin: The Public's Right to Know vs. the National Security State

Real Audio  Real Audio  podcast  MP3

Interview with Danny Schechter, award-winning independent filmmaker, author and editor at MediaChannel.org, conducted by Scott Harris

wikileaks With his unauthorized release of thousands of classified military files related to the U.S. war in Afghanistan this summer, Australian citizen Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, became an internationally known public figure virtually overnight. Over the past few weeks, WikiLeaks has released thousands of secret U.S. State Department cables, exposing Washington's confidential discussions of international issues and assessments of heads of state. With less than one percent of the estimated 250,000 cables published on the Internet or in the pages of five newspapers that were given the entire archive, there is the potential for future dramatic revelations.
