Wisconsin Recall Election Defeat a Wakeup Call for Progressive and Labor Activists

In a stinging defeat for progressive and labor activists, Wisconsin's Republican anti-union Gov. Scott Walker survived an historic recall election by 53 to 46 percent on June 5. Walker's opponent Tom Barrett, who had just a few weeks from his primary win on May 8 to the recall election, was outspent by a 7 to 1 margin, with about 70 percent of Walkers' donations coming in from out-of-state. This was the second defeat for Barrett, the Democratic mayor of Milwaukee, who previously lost to Walker in November 2010.

Exit polling indicated support for Walker did not necessarily revolve around the governor's aggressive assault against the state's public employee unions, whose bargaining rights he revoked shortly after taking office in January 2011. According to exit poll surveys, 60 percent of voters who cast ballots on June 5 expressed the view echoed in Walker campaign advertisements, that recall elections were only appropriate for official misconduct, while only 37 percent of voters said recall elections were appropriate for any reason. Surprising and disappointing many labor activists was the fact that Walker won 38 percent of support among voters from union households.

The only victory recall activists could claim after polls closed was the apparent Democratic takeover of the evenly divided Wisconsin Senate, after successfully recalling a GOP senator in the state's 21st District. But that victory was largely symbolic in that the Senate won't come back into session until January, long after this November's legislative elections. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Matthew Rothschild, editor of the Progressive Magazine, who discusses the lessons that should be learned by progressive activists in Wisconsin and across the U.S. who are still working to recover from their painful defeat in the recall election.
