An address by Bill McKibben, founder of the grassroots climate campaign 350.org, upon receiving the annual Gandhi Peace Award from the New Haven-based group Promoting Enduring Peace on April 18 in Hamden, CT

Bill McKibben, Schumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College and author of a dozen books about the environment, beginning with "The End of Nature" in 1989, which is regarded as the first book for a general audience on climate change. The group he founded, 350.org, has coordinated 15,000 rallies in 189 countries since 2009. The Boston Globe said in 2010 that he was "probably the country’s most important environmentalist."

Information for Affiliates

Is your radio station or web radio site interested in becoming a Between The Lines Affiliate?

Here's information on what we do and what you need to know to become a Between The Lines affiliate.

Between The Lines is free to noncommercial radio stations and Internet sites, although we do welcome donations. When you register by contacting us by phone at (203) 268-8446 or by email, we will send more details on how you can receive the broadcast version of the program each week as well as add your radio station's airdate/time to our online schedule and keep your contact information on our file for regular schedule/site maintenance updates, special audio projects for radio broadcast and fundraising premiums.

Production Schedule

We produce the show weekly. Each week's program, which carries a "Week Ending" date of Friday of the following week, is ready for download by 12 noon ET Wednesday in the week in which it is produced. Each show is available for rebroadcast for ten days from the date it is first made available (i.e., through the "Week Ending" date).

For example, a program with the "Week Ending" date of May 24, 2013, as indicated on our home page, would be available for broadcast on Wednesday, May 15, 2013. It would remain in place as the current week's show until about noon of the following Wednesday (May 22), at which time it would become "Last Week's" show on this page.

We suggest that you air BTL as soon after a new broadcast file becomes available as possible, rather than toward the end of its news cycle.

Please note that we also have two alternate sites for downloading BTL in case there are ever problems with this site:

• Pacifica Radio Network at audioport.org (You must be a PRN affiliate and have a password).

Registration

Once you let us know you are interested in broadcasting Between The Lines, we will send you a registration form. Your registration allows us to provide you with last-minute updates for Between The Lines, as well as information on special programming and BTL affiliate discounts on fundraising premiums. We will also send you invitations to join our listservs for the BTL Weekly Summary and BTL Q&A transcripts.

To download an MP3 file

For Windows PCs: right-click on the link for the MP3 file you wish to download. A pop-up menu will appear with several selections, including one that allows you to download the file to your computer's hard disk. Depending on your computer and browser, the wording may be "Save Target As," "Save Link As" or "Download Link to Disk." Select the appropriate "Save" or "Download" choice. After you make that menu selection, a pop-up dialogue box should appear that allows you to save the file wherever you choose.

For Macs: Right-click if you use a three button mouse; otherwise hold down the control key and click on the link (or just click on the link and hold the mouse button down until a menu appears). Select from the menu that appears and select the menu option that allows you to download the file. Depending on which browser you use, the download selection may be labeled "Save Target As," "Save Link As" or "Download Link to Disk." Select the appropriate "Save" or "Download" choice. After you make that menu selection, a pop-up dialogue box should appear that allows you to specify where you want to save the file (unless your browser is configured to always save in a location you have chosen previously).
