 Survey Reveals Decline
in Status of Iraqi Women

Interview with Tobey Goldfarb,
researcher at Women for Women International,
conducted by Melinda Tuhus

women

Women for Women International works with women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts. In 2004, the organization surveyed 1,000 women in Iraq and found that 90 percent of them were optimistic about the future. Women for Women has just published a followup report on Iraq in conjunction with the NGO Coordination Committee in Iraq, which surveyed 1,500 of the most marginalized women in the country -- those who have been adversely affected by the war and in desperate need of services.

The latest survey conducted in the fifth year of the Iraq war found just 27 percent expressing optimism about the future. Two-thirds said violence against women is increasing, while 70 percent said their families are unable to earn enough money to pay for daily necessities. Almost 90 percent of the women surveyed said the divisions in Iraq along religious and sectarian lines have had a negative impact on the country.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Tobey Goldfarb, a researcher with Women for Women International and author of the 2008 Iraq report, part of the group's Stronger Women, Stronger Nations report series. She summarizes the survey's findings and the impact the U.S invasion has had on Iraqi women.

Women for Women International works in several countries around the world to give marginalized women the knowledge, skills and resources to move from victim to survivor to active citizen. Visit the group's website at www.womenforwomen.org or call (202) 737-7705 to obtain a copy of the group's Iraq report.

Planned U.S. Missile Defense Bases
in Eastern Europe Provokes Protest

Interview with Bruce Gagnon,
coordinator of the
Global Network Against Weapons and
Nuclear Power in Space,
conducted by Scott Harris

warcost

The U.S. shootdown of a failed American spy satellite using sea-based Aegis missiles on Feb. 20 was criticized by China and other nations suspicious that the Bush administration used the falling satellite as a target of opportunity to test advanced anti-missile technology. While the U.S. had criticized China after it had succeeded in shooting down one of its own satellites in January of 2007, the Pentagon insisted its targeting of the U.S. satellite was solely to protect people on the ground from the satellite's payload of toxic fuel.

But the U.S. refusal to sign an international treaty sponsored by Russia and China that would ban the deployment or use of weapons in outer space has fueled concerns that the Pentagon is now embarked on its publicly stated goal of achieving full spectrum military dominance in outer space. Part of that plan can be seen in missile interceptor bases recently built in California and Alaska. President Bush's plan to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a radar installation linked to the program inside the Czech Republic, justified as a defense against Iranian missile attack, has provoked angry opposition in Russia.

Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. Gagnon, who has actively opposed the weaponization of space for more than a decade, discusses the links between these various U.S. weapons systems and why a growing grassroots movement is opposing new ground and space-based missile defense programs.

Media's Fondness of John McCain
Skews Coverage of Candidate's Gaffes and Scandals

Interview with Eric Boehlert,
senior fellow with Media Matters for America,
conducted by Scott Harris

mccain

The firestorm that erupted after the repeated broadcast of a blunt sermon criticizing U.S. policy delivered by Sen. Barack Obama's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, was skillfully addressed in the presidential candidate's March 18 Philadelphia speech on racial issues facing the nation. While the media's attention on Rev. Wright's incendiary comments is understandable, the lack of media scrutiny of endorsements sought out by presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain from radical right pastors Rev. John Hagee and Rev. Rod Parsley is hard to explain. Hagee has a long history of anti-Catholic bigotry and McCain described Parsley, a dominionist who advocates the destruction of Islam, as his "spiritual guide."

The U.S. corporate media's bias has been a topic of discussion on the political left and right for some time, but media critics have noted a particular bias against Democratic presidential candidates in recent elections. Many point to influential newspapers and network TV's habit of uncritically repeating GOP talking points and using smear tactics challenging candidates' patriotism and morality.

Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with journalist Eric Boehlert, a senior fellow with Media Matters for America, who has written for both Salon.com and Rolling Stone magazine. Boehlert examines what he believes is the corporate media's double standard of accountability for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and new strategies that progressive activists on the Internet are employing to confront the perceived bias.

Eric Boehlert is the author of "Lapdogs: How the Press rolled Over for Bush." Read Boehlert's articles online at www.mediamatters.org.
