 Deteriorating U.S.-Russia Relations Missing from Presidential Election Debate Interview with Stephen F. Cohen, professor of Russian Studies at New York University, conducted by Scott Harris  Relations between the Washington and Moscow have deteriorated during the presidency of George W. Bush due, in part, to his policies that expanded NATO eastward, abrogation of the anti-ballistic missile treaty and a White House push for the development of a new generation of tactical nuclear weapons. More recently, the White House has sought to establish an anti-missile system in Eastern Europe, with 10 interceptors to be deployed in Poland and an associated radar system inside the Czech Republic. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain have criticized former president and current Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin for his crackdown on freedom of the press and participatory democracy, both candidates promising to institute a more aggressive policy toward the Kremlin. But some observers believe that Washington's agenda, perceived as hostile by many Russians, has only helped revive nationalism and support for Putin and his successor Dmitry Medvedev. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Stephen F. Cohen, professor of Russian Studies at New York University, who examines the chilly state of U.S.- Russia relations and the lack of substantive debate about Russia in the U.S. presidential election campaign. Israeli Military Resisters Seek International Pressure to End Occupation of Palestinian Lands Interview with Ofer Neiman, an activist with the Israeli military resisters' group, Yesh Gvul, conducted by Melinda Tuhus 
Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus visited Palestine and Israel in late May and spoke with Ofer Neiman, an activist with Yesh Gvul, at an outdoor cafe just outside the gates of Jerusalem's Old City. The 37-year-old served three years' active duty and nine years as a reservist in an elite intelligence unit of the Israeli Air Force. After observing the role of the Air Force in carrying out operations against Palestinians in the Occupied Territories in violation of international law, Neiman requested and was granted transfer to a non-active unit and later received a standard discharge letter. He was not prosecuted. Neiman said his group still pursues its original goal of supporting military resisters, but has expanded its efforts to enlist support from people around the world to put pressure on Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian lands. In New Book, Former White House Press Secretary Says U.S. Media Complicit in Bush's Iraq War Propaganda Interview with investigative journalist Robert Parry, conducted by Scott Harris  In his book, McClellan accuses former White House political adviser Karl Rove of lying to him about his role in the White House operation to reveal the identity of covert CIA officer Valeri Plame Wilson, which the press secretary believes irreparably damaged his credibility with the Washington press corps. In addition to his criticism of the president, McClellan accuses the U.S. media of being deferential, complicit enablers by their failure to challenge the Bush White House case for launching the Iraq war. Democratic Reps. Robert Wexler of Florida and Jerry Nadler of New York have called for McClellan to testify before the House Judiciary Committee about the administration's deliberate efforts to mislead the American people into the Iraq War and the violations of law and cover-up in the Valerie Plame case. Between the Lines' Scott Harris spoke with investigative journalist Robert Parry who assesses the revelations published in McClellan's book and his critique of the U.S. media.
