Army Sgt. Matthis Chiroux Refuses
Recruited by the U.S. Army fresh out of high school, 24-year-old Matthis Chiroux of Auburn, Ala. has served in Afghanistan, Japan, Germany and the Philippines for nearly six years. Now a sergeant and Army photojournalist, Chiroux has decided to refuse orders that will deploy him to Iraq on June 15.
to Serve in "Illegal" Iraq War Interview with U.S. Army Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, conducted by Scott Harris Chiroux announced his decision at the Cannon House Office building in Washington, D.C. with fellow members of Iraq Veterans Against the War at his side. Many of the Iraq vets had testified before the Congressional Progressive Caucus in what they called the Winter Soldier hearings on the Hill, a historical reference to similar testimony in 1971 organized by Vietnam Veterans Against the War in Detroit. Sgt. Chiroux stated that during his work as a photojournalist he had heard many, "stomach-churning testimonies of the horrors and crimes taking place in Iraq." Believing that the occupation of Iraq is both unconstitutional and illegal, Chiroux says that participation in the war violates his core values as a human being, where he expects that he'll surely be a party to "war crimes." Choosing to remain in the United States, Chiroux says he is ready to defend himself from any charges brought against him by the Army. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Sgt. Chiroux, who explains why he signed up for the military and his reason for joining thousands of other soldiers who have left their posts for varying reasons since the start of the Iraq war in 2003.
