Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

Supreme Court Decision Opened Flood Gates for Unregulated Money in 2010 Election Campaign

democracyforsale In the final stretch of this year's congressional election campaign, the flood of corporate money being spent on attack advertising targeting mostly Democrats, has itself become a hot campaign issue. In recent stump speeches, President Obama has harshly criticized conservative special interest groups that solicit contributions from anonymous donors to spend on negative campaign ads. The president has specifically cited the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Crossroads GPS affiliated with Republican campaign strategists Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie.

President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and other Democrats have expressed concern that foreign money is being used by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to fund their $75 million campaign budget, an accusation denied by the Chamber. The charges stem from an investigation by The Think Progress website, run by the Center for American Progress, which asserts that the Chamber pays for political attack ads out of its general account, which solicits foreign contributions.

Rules governing campaign spending and disclosure were changed this year after the Jan. 21 U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case, which ruled that corporations and unions have the same rights as citizens to influence elections. Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Nick Nyhart, co-founder and president of the group Public Campaign, who discusses the effect the Citizens United case has had on this year's election and his advocacy of the Fair Elections Now bill that would limit the influence of big money in politics
