FBI Agents at Guantanamo
Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine issued a report on May 20 which describes the many conflicts between FBI agents, military and CIA officers related to the harsh interrogation techniques used against U.S.-held detainees at prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. As early as 2002, FBI agents stationed at Guantanamo established a "war crimes file" to document allegations of prisoner abuse at the hands of American interrogators, but they were later ordered to close the file down by their FBI superiors. In addition to their concerns that the treatment of prisoners violated U.S. law and the Geneva Conventions, the agents documented their worry that the physical and psychological abuse of prisoners jeopardized the collection of useful intelligence and prosecution.
Kept "War Crimes File" Interview with Marjorie Cohn, president of the Naitonal Lawyers Guild, conducted by Scott Harris High officials in the Justice Department brought the FBI agent's concerns about the abuse of prisoners to the National Security Council in 2003, but members of the Council, which includes President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and chaired at the time by then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, took no action. Documents in the inspector general's report described prisoners subjected to long periods of painful stress positions, isolation, forced nudity, sexual humiliation and threats with attack dogs. The National Lawyers' Guild has called on Congress to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute high officials and lawyers in the Bush administration for their role in the abuse and torture of U.S.-held prisoners. Between The Lines Scott Harris spoke with Marjorie Cohn, president of the Guild, who discusses the inspector general's report and her group's demand for congressional action to hold officials accountable for authorizing torture. Marjorie Cohn is author of "Cowboy Republic: Six Ways the Bush Gang Has Defied the Law." Contact the The National Lawyers' Guild at (212) 627-2656 or visit their website at www.nlg.org.
