- For the first time in 20 years, Haiti is re-establishing its Army with senior commanders tainted by human rights abuses in the early 1990s. The Miami Herald reports that Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise claims he’s organizing the 5,000-soldier force to deal with natural disasters, humanitarian assistance and border security. - Over the last two years, India has expanded its solar capacity by 700 percent, with plans for the rapid increase in the number of new solar projects and the development of new technologies to provide renewable energy to India’s ailing agricultural sector. - In the early 1800s, the Jesuit order of the Catholic Church in Maryland, which founded Georgetown University, owned plantations and sold slaves. The Jesuits made their largest sale of enslaved people in 1838, when they sold 271 slaves to sugar plantations in Louisiana.
