Award-winning Investigative Journalist Robert Parry (1949-2018)

Award-winning investigative journalist and founder/editor of ConsortiumNews.com, Robert Parry has passed away. His ground-breaking work uncovering Reagan-era dirty wars in Central America and many other illegal and immoral policies conducted by successive administrations and U.S. intelligence agencies, stands as an inspiration to all in journalists working in the public interest.

Robert had been a regular guest on our Between The Lines and Counterpoint radio shows -- and many other progressive outlets across the U.S. over four decades.

His penetrating analysis of U.S. foreign policy and international conflicts will be sorely missed, and not easily replaced. His son Nat Parry writes a tribute to his father: Robert Parry’s Legacy and the Future of Consortiumnews.

"The deployment of 20,000 additional border troops ... you really have to ask yourself, is this necessary? Apprehensions are lower than they've been since 1970; they doubled the number of border agents since 2004 and so there's no crisis. So if there is no crisis, why would you deploy all these troops on the border and then fail to provide any type of oversight or accountability?"

– Keith Rushing, communications director with the Rights Working Group on the militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border

A bi-partisan group of eight U.S. Senators came together early in 2013 to announce their framework for immigration reform legislation that includes a chance for the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the U.S. to earn citizenship. Provisions of the bill include a wait of 13 years or more for most unauthorized immigrants before they can become citizens; stringent border enforcement and deportation measures; mandate that employers use an electronic eligibility verification system and requirement that undocumented residents register with the government, pay fines and back taxes.  Story continues

glasssteagall

A just-released report from Public Citizen, titled “Safety Glass,” marks the 80th anniversary of the enactment of the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated commercial and investment banking in the aftermath of the Great Depression. On June 16, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Banking Act, also known as “Glass- Steagall, that created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The legislation was a product of a negotiated agreement whereby the federal government would guarantee funds deposited in banks in exchange for mandating that all banks sell-off their investment divisions, keeping commercial banking functions like loans made to consumers and businesses, separate from risky investment activity.  Story continues
