In 2007, Chris Hedges, a journalist and theologian, wrote the New York Times bestselling book, "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America" which was quite prescient in foretelling the political climate we're now living under Trump and Project 2025. If you don't know why he believes the next election may be our last, now is a good time to find out why. He'll be in New Haven this Saturday, Oct. 17. https://btlonline.org/hedgesforum #midtermelection

Back in 2007, Between The Lines sponsored Chris Hedges' NYT bestselling book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. Turns out this book was prescient. We know we have a copy of this book, but we couldn't find it, so we asked an AI agent "How did Chris Hedge's book, "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America" published on January 9, 2007 foretell the political climate today under Trump administration and Project 2025?"

AI Mode Conversation:
In his 2007 book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, journalist and theologian Chris Hedges outlined how a radicalized, totalitarian iteration of the Christian Right was systematically working to dismantle American democratic institutions. While published well before the political rise of Donald Trump and the drafting of Project 2025, Hedges’ thesis accurately anticipated the structural, ideological, and political mechanics driving the conservative movement today.
Rather than looking at the movement as a standard political faction, Hedges categorized it as a mass movement seeking a "Christian state." When mapped against the official mandates of Project 2025 (the Heritage Foundation's Mandate for Leadership), the prescience of his warnings becomes starkly apparent.
The primary areas where Hedges’ 2007 warnings foretold the modern political architecture of Project 2025 are broken down in the table below:

Between The Lines Radio Newsmagazine is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and supporters are invited to join us in marking this milestone year!

For over three decades, a dedicated all-volunteer team of citizen journalists has produced independent, progressive media that is now broadcast on over 70 radio stations nationwide. To honor this journey, join the community at the First and Summerfield United Methodist Church, 425 College St., New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. for a public forum featuring a keynote address by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, author, and activist Chris Hedges. His timely talk, "The Next Election May Be Our Last: Why a General Strike Is Democracy’s Last Line of Defense Against Fascism," will address the current challenges facing democracy and explore nonviolent resistance strategies. Chris will also discuss and sign his new book, "Requiem for Gaza," immediately following the presentation.

2) Ari Paul, New York City-based journalist and lecturer at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, discusses his recent FAIR.org column, "CNN Cleared to Join CBS Under Trumpian Paramount Ownership," and issues related to the growing concentration of U.S. media ownership in the hands of Trump friendly oligarchs.

3) Michael Zweig, emeritus professor of economics, founding director of the Center for Study of Working-Class Life at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and author of “Class, Race, and Gender: Challenging the Injuries and Divisions of Capitalism,” talks about the 2026 midterm election debate about "socialism," recent primary victories by Democratic Socialists of America candidates, and a growing number of Americans' declining confidence in attaining the "American Dream."

4) Salon columnist Heather Digby Parton, who writes Digby’s Hullabaloo blog, talks about her recent article, "The dark reasons behind all the Richard Nixon worship: MAGA needs to maintain its grip on the GOP after Donald Trump — and the 37th president is key." The column outlines Trump supporters' current effort to rehabilitate Nixon, along with unsupported charges that he was unjustly forced to resign in 1973 by the "deep state."
